3.1.a.2. Units of measurement used for continuing education courses are:
3.1.a.2.A. 1 contact hour = 50 minutes of instruction
3.1.a.2.B. 1 contact hour = 50 minutes of clinical or laboratory practice in an informal offering
3.1.a.2.C. 1 continuing education unit (CEU) = 10 contact hours of instruction
3.1.a.2.D. 1 academic semester hour = 15 contact hours of instruction
3.1.a.2.E. 1 academic quarter hour - 10 contact hours of instruction
3.1.a.3. Each licensed practical nurse with an active license to practice practical nursing shall
complete twenty four (24) contact hours of continuing education, as approved by this rule. On or before
June 30, in each even numbered year each licensed practical nurse shall file a report of his or her continuing
education activities with the board at the time the licensee files an application for renewal of his or her
license.
Within the twenty (24) hours of required continuing education you must have three (3) hours of substance abuse or drug diversion, two (2) hour of veterans or mental health for veterans and their families every two (2) years on the EVEN YEARS. If you are a new nurse or new to West Virginia you are also required to complete a ONE TIME two (2) hours of end of life care with pain management required continuing education (You need to keep a copy of this certificate in case you are audited or you can upload it to your nurse portal on the message center where it can remain in case you are audited.
You need to submit your audit documentation within thirty (30) days from date of issue. If you are having difficulty obtain any of this information please don't hesitate to contact the Board as soon as possible at 304-558-3572 or email lpn.board@wv.gov. We are here to help you in any way!
Licensed Practical Nurses must maintain five (5) years of continuing education at all times for Audit purposes. You can log into your nurse portal and click on message center and upload these continuing education at any time. It is your portal to utilize. You are supposed to check your portal at least every thirty (30) days and keep your demographics and emails current.
If you do NOT have the required continuing education for your AUDIT period: Those dates run from July 1st through June 30th: Then complete the form below to agree to sign the consent agreement; which is a 6-12 page contract for discipline on your license: you are charged $30.00 per missing continuing education unit missing and $250.00 fee for the contract to be completed and sent to you. This REMAINS on your nursing license on the public site nursys.com, but once you complete the terms: pay monetary penalty in full and complete the missing required continuing education up and above the continuing educatin required for the current audit period you are in (CE dates will only be for consent agreement if you are audited later on you could not use these!). In order to RENEW your license you must complete and sign the form below and return to the board!

If you worked on a LAPSED license after July 1st of current renewal: then you will be fined $100.00 per month you worked on an expired license and $250.00 to create the 6-7 page contract. In order to RENEW your license you must complete and sign the form below and return to the board!

Applicable Rules and Laws for Verification of Employment Hours
3.1.b.1. Each applicant for renewal of a license, if the license is currently active, or reinstatement of
a license, if the license is lapsed or on the non-practicing list, shall verify that he or she engaged in four
hundred (400) clock hours of practical nursing practice within the prescribed two (2) year year reporting
period.
Verification of employment hours: Employer can send directly to us at the board via fax: 304-558-4367 or email: lpn.board@wv.gov The employer can submit directly to the board on their letterhead: It must include dates and hours, but does NOT have to be notarized if they send it. If they give it to the nurse to upload the forms below must be notarized.
